Liturgical Ministers
Eucharistic Ministers
Willingness to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, reflects not only a response to our Baptismal call to serve the people of God, but a commitment to Christ as we share in the preaching, teaching and leading aspects of the church. Only fully initiated members of the faith community can serve as Ministers of the Eucharist. Eucharistic Ministers recognize the Body of Christ in those to whom they offer Eucharist and act as the Body of Christ by leading a Christian life and by fully participating in the life of the parish and the wider community. The minister's willingness to commit to a quarterly schedule, to prepare properly for service and to arrive on time dressed appropriately for the assigned Mass, further reflects that commitment.
Those who wish to bring Communion to the sick at home, in a nursing home or in a hospital must undergo a separate six week training and are mandated specifically for this service. Contact Sr. Marietta Umlor for more information on bringing Communion to the Sick.
Please Note
- Eucharistic ministers please advise anyone who comes forward in your line with a pyx to see the priest following Communion. Anyone with questions regarding bringing Communion home to a sick family member or friend should call Sr. Marietta Umlor at 708-873-4635.
- If you are a cup minister and your line is finished and you have wine left, please check that other stations have enough wine to finish distributing to their remaining communicants before you consume the rest of the wine in your cup. If another cup is low; just switch places with that minister.
- With the approach of summer weather, please be conscious of the clothing worn as you serve. We do not want to be a distraction in any way while on the altar.
- Please remember to arrive at least 10 minutes early to sign in as Eucharistic minister.
- Sanitizer has been placed on both sides of the Church so that you can use a small amount before you serve as a Eucharistic Minister. Please try to use sanitizer regularly and make sure your hands are dry before you begin to serve.

Lectors
According to the ancient tradition and the teaching of the Church, the readings at Mass other than the Gospel are proclaimed by ministers called Lectors. Lectors bring the living Word of God to the liturgical assembly. In and through them, God speaks to the gathered faithful. The ministry of the Word, therefore, is treated reverently and with great dignity. The Word of God is not merely read during the liturgy. It is proclaimed. Proclamation is a special ministry which presupposes faith and also rouses faith in those who hear the Word proclaimed. Effective proclamation requires the delivery of the message with clarity, conviction and appropriate pace. It also requires serious study and preparation. The Lector is willing to commit to a quarterly schedule, to prepare properly for service and to arrive on time dressed appropriately for the assigned Mass.
Please Note
- We will be celebrating the Feast of the Assumption on Saturday, August 14 and Sunday, August 15. The readings to be proclaimed are the readings for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Day on pages 240-41 of the workbook.

Child Lectors
All that pertains to adult Lectors also applies to children who wish to serve as Lectors. Our ministry of Child Lectors allows children (those who have recieved their First Eucharist through 8th graders) the opportunity to proclaim the Word of God at our weekly Young Peoples' Liturgy of the Word and on other special occasions. Children interested in this ministry commit to one monthly rehearsal (from September through May) at which they receive their assignments.

Altar Servers
We would like to thank all of our altar servers for the fabulous job that they are doing. All of our priests, deacons, and sacristans have commented on how respectful, reverent and thorough our servers are. Furthermore, we have had numerous parishioners state that they are pleased that we are back to having four altar servers. Our parishioners have also noticed how respectful our servers are. Our priests and deacons have mentioned the enthusiasm that all of our altar servers have for serving God. Thank you for your willingness and desire to serve God and the members of St. Michael Church, your presence is felt and greatly appreciated!
Please Note
- Please remember that if you are unable to serve a scheduled mass, it is your responsibility to find a substitute.
- Arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled Mass time.
- SHORTS, JEANS, TENNIS SHOES, FLIP-FLOPS, or SANDALS are not suitable when serving at the table of the Lord (for both respect and safety reasons).
